The "LED" refers to the type of backlighting on a LCD screen. These have the highest Contrast and Clarity giving the best picture available. Because LEDs are so small, they are also the lightest and thinest. They also use less energy than an average 60W incandescent light bulb.
LCD - Liquid Crystal Display
The colors are made by charging crystals within the display. These crystals are used to filter the white light into colors. The colors that are used to filter are shown here in the picture to the left(red,green,blue). These sub-pixels form a matrix grid of single colored pixels.
